    La présente partie de l'ISO 13584 spécifie les principes à suivre pour définir les familles et propriétés des composants afin de complètement caractériser les composants et leurs propriétés associées. Les comités de normalisation en charge de développer des hiérarchies normalisées d'identification de composants sont tenus d'appliquer les règles et lignes directrices fournies dans la présente partie de l'ISO 13584. Les utilisateurs et les fournisseurs ont, de leur coté, tout intérêt à suivre ces règles qui définissent une méthodologie pour construire leur propre structure hiérarchique.
