    La norma specifica le caratteristiche ed i metodi di produzione delle radiazioni X e gamma di riferimento per la taratura dei dosimetri e dei rateometri con ratei di kerma in aria da 10 Gy x h-1 a 10 Gy x h-1 e per la determinazione della loro risposta in funzione dell'energia dei fotoni. I metodi per produrre un gruppo di radiazioni di riferimento per un particolare intervallo di valori di energia dei fotoni sono descritti in quattro sezioni che definiscono a loro volta le caratterisitiche delle radiazioni stesse.
