Diese Internationale Norm legt die funktionellen Anforderungen an die Instrumentierung zum Messen des Pegels der Wasseroberfläche (Höhe des Wasserstandes), vor allem zur Bestimmung der Fliessgeschwindigkeiten, fest. Die Norm wird durch einen Anhang ergänzt, der einen Leitfaden zu allgemein verfügbaren Typen von Geräten zur Wasserstandsmessung und die damit verbundene Messunsicherheit enthält.
