This CID covers the requirements for nickel-cadmium storage batteries primarily for service in military vehicles, starting of missile ground power equipment, radio operation, and as a source of electrical energy for operating vehicular accessories control mechanisms. The nickel-cadmium batteries have a wide tolerance to temperature extremes. They require less derating at low temperatures than lead acid units. Since the specific gravity of the battery electrolyte does not change with the state of charge, they are not susceptible to freezing once a discharge is underway. Nickel-cadmium batteries can operate from plus 200 degrees Fahrenheit (degrees F) to minus 65 degrees F without damage or without the threat of freezing.
