ANSI/ISA-61511-1-2018/IEC 61511-1:2016+AMD1:2017 CSV, Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector – Part 1: Framework, definitions, system, hardware and application programming requirements (IEC 61511-1:2016+AMD1:2017 CSV, IDT), adopts and consolidates IEC 61511-1:2016, Functional Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector – Part 1: Framework, Definitions, System, Hardware Application Programming Requirements, with its amendment, AMD1:2017, providing a comprehensive framework for functional safety in safety instrumented systems (SIS) used in the process industry sector. It specifies requirements for the entire SIS safety lifecycle, including hazard and risk assessments, allocation of safety functions to protection layers, SIS design and engineering, application program development, verification, installation, commissioning, validation, operation, maintenance, modification, decommissioning and documentation. This standard emphasizes the management of functional safety, competence of personnel, configuration management, security risk assessment and rigorous testing and validation procedures to make sure that SIS achieves and maintains required safety integrity levels (SIL). It aligns with IEC 61508, Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-related Systems (IEC 61508) provides detailed guidance on hardware selection, software/application programming, fault tolerance, proof testing and audit processes, aiming to maintain consistent, reliable and safe operation of SIS throughout its lifecycle in hazardous industrial environments.
