ISA-TR88.00.02-2022, Machine and Unit States: An Implementation Example of ISA-88.00.01, provides an implementation example of ISA-88.00.01-2010, Batch Control Part 1: Models and Terminology, tailored to automated discrete machines such as packaging equipment. It defines a standardized state-based model and control modes for machines, aiming to create a common “look and feel” across diverse machinery to improve interoperability, reduce variability in programming and facilitate integration with higher-level systems like Manufacturing Execution Systems (MESs). This technical report details machine states (wait and acting types), state transitions and commands within a base state model, along with examples of production, maintenance, manual and user-defined modes. It introduces PackTags, a uniform naming convention for command, status and administration data tags used for machine control and monitoring. It specifies the structure, data types and usage to support consistent communication between machines and supervisory systems. This report also includes updates from previous ISA-88.00.01 versions to enhance clarity, usability and functional completeness, emphasizing safety, compatibility and extensibility in automated machine control.
