This Section describes the procedure to be adopted for determining the resistance of leather to surface-growing fungi. These fungi do not physically weaken the leather but are objectionable for aesthetic reasons or for their adverse effect on surface properties such as hardening of leather.NOTE: Owing to the difficulty in procuring a leather sample of known susceptibility to fungal growth for use as a test control specimen, this Method uses an agar test medium. This Standard provides a laboratory test which is simulated under laboratory conditions. This excludes testing of leather in the field which faces other drastic conditions, which are not used to simulate the growth of fungi under laboratory conditions.
