This method covers the determination of the moisture content of a soil as a percentage of its dry mass using a system of infrared lights.

This method covers the determination of the moisture content of a soil as a percentage of its dry mass using a system of infrared lights.This is a rapid method and is considered less accurate than the standard method AS 1289.2.1.1. A method of correlating results from this method with the standard method is given in AS 1289.B3.1 and this approach may be used where a more accurate result is desired.The method is not suitable for soils containing gypsum, calcareous or organic matter since the temperature of drying cannot be controlled.
