Specifies requirements for design, construction and installation of roller shutters intended to protect trafficable openings in fire-rated walls. Compliance is based on prototype testing in accordance with AS 1530.4. Certification and labelling requirements are included. Design details of a typical 2-hour fire-rated roller shutter assembly are provided in an appendix.

This Standard specifies requirements for the installation and operation of fire-resistant roller shutters required to protect openings in walls and to resist the passage of fire. A prototype fire-resistant roller shutter is required to be tested for fire-resistance in accordance with AS 1530.4.NOTE: The design details of a roller shutter assembly suitable for installation in an opening not greater than 3600 mm wide or 14 m2in area are included in Appendix A. Experience with such roller shutters in actual fires has demonstrated their ability to impede the passage of flames and hot gases, but, when manufactured of steel, they become hot and can represent a significant heat radiation hazard. Accordingly, Building Regulations may not permit such roller shutters to be used in lieu of fire-resistant doorsets. Due to radiation hazard, it is advised that no combustible materials should be fixed to, or stacked within 3 metres in front of an uninsulated roller shutter.
