This specification provides a system of classification for various shapes and types of indexable inserts, and specifies the dimensions of a standard range of inserts. These inserts may be of carbide or other suitable materials, such as ceramic, and are limited to those held mechanically* in a tool holder. In Section 2 the shapes included are hexagonal, octagonal, pentagonal, round, square, triangular, and also rhombic and parallelogram-shaped. The types include alternatives of clearance angles, special features on one or both faces, circular attachment holes, and particular corner configurations.Dimensions and features for a standard range of inserts in precision (G) and utility (U) tolerance classes are provided in Section 3, as well as requirements for size of attachment holes for non-standard inserts.Appendices provide a further classification of carbides according to intended application, the method of measurement of dimension m, and reference details for a comprehensive range of inserts with guidance on preferred selections.
