This Standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of an organic coating on a metallic substrate to penetration by scratching with a needle. On soft materials such as aluminium alloys and thin gauge steels substrates below 0.4 mm the needle may deform the substrate rather than scratch the surface. If the substrate is deformed then this test is not valid. Soft coatings such as polyvinylchloride (PVC) and structured coatings may not give precise results due to the soft nature of the coating and/or the potential for the needle to snag. This method is not applicable to conductive coatings.
