This standard specifies requirements for sterilizers intended for use in hospitals, hospital laboratories and similar situations for the sterilization of instruments, metalware, glassware and oils. These sterilizers utilize air, heated electrically to a temperature of not less than 160C, and an automatically controlled sterilizing cycle, to achieve the sterilizing function. This standard does not apply to sterilizers for-(a) liquids, oils and greases which have a boiling point less than the selected sterilizing temperature; or (b) fluids in non-vented bottles.NOTES:1. Where oils to be sterilized are intended for use in eyedrops or injections, additional equipment, e.g. a simulated load probe and recorder, is required to reduce hazards to public health (see Appendix A, Paragraph A3).2. Care should be exercised when sterilizing oils or greases which may produce flammable vapours.3. The operating temperature required and other details need to be discussed at the time of enquiry or order (see Appendix A).
