Sets out a gravimetric method for the determination of total suspended particulates in ambient air collected using a high volume sampler. The procedure is based on the United States Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40, Chapter 1, Part 50, V, Appendix B, Reference Method for the Determination of Suspended Particulates in the Atmosphere (High Volume Method).

This standard sets out a gravimetric method for determining the suspended particulate matter in ambient air. The particles collected are of equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) less than approximately 50 m. The upper limit of the particulate matter depends upon sampling conditions, especially wind velocity and direction. The method provides a measure of mean concentration over the sampling period employed. Sampling is normally of 24 h duration to take account of diurnal variations. Provided that the mass of the filter is determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, concentrations of 1 g/m3and above may be determined using a 24 h sampling period.
