Abstract - (Show below) - (Hide below)

Specifies requirements for a method of manufacture of serially produced metallic and non-metallic unfired pressure vessels having a maximum volume of 150 L, and specified limits, related to the vessel contents, on the product of the design pressure and the total vapour space. For such vessels, this method of manufacture based on type testing provides an alternative to the method given in AS 1210, SAA Unfired Pressure Vessels Code. Burst tests and other performance tests on a significant number of representative samples are used to validate design, materials, and fabrication, all simultaneously.

Scope - (Show below) - (Hide below)

This Standard specifies requirements for the material, design, manufacture, and testing of serially produced metallic or non-metallic or combination unfired pressure vessels having-(a) a maximum volume of 150 L; (b) a design pressure exceeding 50 kPa; and(c) a product of the design pressure (in kilopascals) and the total vapour space (in litres) that is greater than 1000 but less than 100 000 except where the vessel contents are harmful to humans (i.e. flammable, toxic, corrosive, radioactive, etc), in which case the upper limit is 5000.NOTE: The vapour space is the maximum volume which will contain compressed gas or vapour or liquefied gas or liquid above its atmospheric boiling point.Such vessels may be refillable or non-refillable.For vessels within the range specified in (a), (b) and (c) above, this Standard provides an alternative method of design and manufacture to that given in AS 1210, but it is not intended to apply to-(i) pressure vessels covered by other Australian Standards, e.g. portable fire extinguishers, LP gas fuel vessels for automotive use, water heaters; (ii) gas cylinders covered by AS 2030.1, AS 2030.2, AS 2030.3, AS 2030.4, and Supplement No 1 to AS 2030; (iii) glass and plastics bottles; or (iv) vacuum vessels (i.e. vessels that operate only below atmospheric pressure). It should be noted that pressure vessels for use in Australia are governed by Acts and Regulations administered by Inspecting Authorities in each State and Territory of the Commonwealth. The attention of the user and manufacturer is directed to the need to make application for approval of all vessels to the relevant authorities (i.e. the Inspecting Authority having jurisdiction in each of the States or Territories in which the vessel is to be installed or used).
