Specifies classification, design, interchangeability dimensions with tolerances, finish, marking requirements for coupling body for 50 mm towballs, which are used for the towing of caravans, very light and light trailers of up to 3.5 t in tension and compression, transverse thrust and pull-out forces. A static strength test and a dynamic test are also described in the appendices.

This Standard specifies requirements for coupling bodies for ball couplings which are suitable for use in towing very light and light trailers up to 3.5 t aggregate trailer mass, in normal use on sealed and unsealed roads.NOTES:1 Towbars and towballs are specified in AS 4177.1 and AS 4177.2 respectively.2 The requirements for off-road applications are beyond the scope of this Standard.3 Light trailers include caravans, boat trailers, horse floats and other equipment capable of being towed.4 Three rating classes are specified in this Standard, i.e. Type 750 kg, Type 2000 kg, and Type 3500 kg.
