This Standard specifies requirements for the construction, content and design of machine readable identity cards such as drivers’ licences, membership cards, internal security passes or access control cards for any organization, and possibly electronic passports. The Standard applies to cards that establish that the person identified is authorized by the issuing organization to have access to areas, activities or privileges controlled by that organization. It does not apply to multipurpose identity cards that verify the identity of a person to any inquirer in any context, and which take the form of smartcards, cards with a magnetic stripe, optical cards, or combinations thereof.
