This specification applies to direct-on-line a.c. motor starters for industrial use, intended to start and accelerate a motor to normal speed, and to provide means for the protection of the motor and its associated circuits against operating overloads. It applies only to starters, the main contacts of which are intended to be connected to circuits of rated voltage not exceeding 11 kV. The direct-on-line starters dealt with herein are not designed to interrupt short-circuit currents. Therefore, suitable short-circuit protection in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation should form part of the installation. The specification does not apply to controlgear for electrical traction or for aircraft, nor to starters for d.c. motors, or static starters for a.c. motors.
