The Australian and New Zealand Standard for children's nightwear, AS/NZS 1249:1999, was introduced to reduce the incidents of children's night-time attire igniting in the event of contact with heating sources such as fires, but more predominantly bar radiators. The standard took into account the characteristics that made these garments dangerous namely the flammability of the fabric and style of the garment. In the past, garments produced with highly flammable fabric styled to be long and loose fitting have contributed to the serious injury of children when contact has been made with a radiator.

AS/NZS 1249:1999 specifies that garments made from highly flammable fabrics must be styled to reduce the risk of ignition and maximum garment dimensions are specified. These garments are labelled accordingly specifying that these garments are flammable and should be kept away from fire. Other garments made from fabrics with a low fire hazard or are designed specifically to reduce the risk of ignition are labelled Low Fire Danger.

Regulations have been put in place banning nightwear garments from being sold that do not meet the labelling and other specific requirements of this Standard. There has also been discussion to ban sales of pre-loved sleepwear garments in second-hand stores unless assurance can be given that the meet the requirements specified in the Standard.

Currently, the Standard is under revision. The revision is being undertaken to include requirements that come under question due to trend changes in fashion and to include as many requirements relating to garments, which may be considered sleepwear, as possible.

This Standard specifies design, performance and labelling requirements for four categories of children's nightwear, together with some garments commonly worn both day and night. It also covers requirements for the labelling of paper patterns for these garments.NOTES:1 Appendix A is a flow chart which will be of assistance in interpreting the Standard when designing children's nightwear.2 Appendix B provides a general indication of the burning characteristics of different types of fibres; however, it is not possible to accurately predict the burning behaviour of any garment solely on the basis of the fibre content of the component fabric or fabrics. Prediction of the burning behaviour of garments incorporating fibre blend is not possible from data on the individual fibres in the blend (see warning in Appendix B).3 There are some garments which will not meet the requirements of any of the categories in this Standard and therefore cannot comply with this Standard.
