1.1 This test method describes a standardized procedure for removing volatile materials such as gasoline and water from used engine oils prior to further oil analysis. It also provides an estimate of the amount of such volatiles present in used engine oils.

1.1.1 Another estimate of the amount of volatile materials in used engine oils can be obtained by Test Method D3525, which determines the weight percent of the used oil sample boiling below the boiling point of n-tetradecene. In any case of dispute, the amount of volatiles as determined by Test Method D3525 shall be considered the referee value.

Note 1-The time and temperature conditions specified in this test method have proven adequate for most oils tested for balancing the viscosity effects caused by removal of the heaviest gasoline ends and those caused by the removal of the lightest base oil fractions. Thus at times the test method will slightly overestimate or underestimate the true gasoline content of the oil, especially with oils containing significant amounts of light-base stocks and oils containing abnormally high amounts of heavy gasoline ends.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statement, see 6.1 and 8.5.
