1.1This specification covers the use of an aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP) composite mesh product, provided in a pre-manufactured weave architecture. The composite mesh is placed within the concrete cover of reinforced concrete structures, typically installed on the form work prior to casting. Its intended primary use is to prevent concrete spalling. Additionally, composite mesh systems can prevent concrete scaling, cracking, and provide shrinkage control. The composite mesh systems covered by this specification shall meet the requirements as described herein.

1.2The composite mesh can be qualified using the test methods in this specification if it meets the requirements given in Table 1. Acceptable production lots must meet the requirements in Table 2.

1.3The text of this specification references notes which provide explanatory material. These notes shall not be considered as requirements of this specification.

1.4This specification is applicable for either SI (as Specification D8538M) or inch-pound units (as Specification D8538).

1.5Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the inch-pound units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.

1.6This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.7This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
