1.1This specification covers fully formulated glycol-based coolants with low electrical conductivity for use in electric vehicles (EV).

1.2Coolants are formulated for cooling systems in battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), or hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) where a low electrical conductivity coolant is required.

1.3Coolants covered by this specification are not intended to circulate within a fuel cell stack in a fuel cell electric vehicle.

1.4Coolant in this specification shall be used as supplied and need no further dilution by the user.

1.5Coolants shall provide protection against corrosion, freezing, and overheating.

1.6Coolants may circulate within the vehicle battery, or other vehicle components or may circulate through a cooling plate heat exchanger used to manage heat loads from batteries and other electrical components. Coolants shall not be used in direct immersion applications where there is a risk of contact with electrified components or circuits.

1.7Coolants manage heat loads within the vehicle, prevent thermal runaway, and may serve to either cool or heat the batteries or electrical components.

1.8Coolants shall be fully compatible with all system components in which they are in contact, including metals, polymers, and elastomers.

1.9Coolants shall not be mixed or contaminated by a different coolant type.

1.10Coolants may be used in non-vehicle applications. The requirements for non-vehicle applications are not addressed by this standard.

1.11Coolants are not intended to be used in internal combustion engines.

1.12Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.

1.13This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.14This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
