1.1These test methods cover standardized procedures for evaluating the cross-grain compression strength and stiffness of wood and wood-based products.

1.2Two types of test methods are provided: fundamental and application methods.

1.2.1Fundamental Test Methods—These test methods characterize the general cross-grain compression strength and stiffness of the material using specimens that are not necessarily of commercial size. The results from these tests are intended to serve as potential inputs for modeling and analysis.

1.2.2Application Test Methods—These test methods are designed to develop test data that represent the cross-grain compression stress states encountered in service. This is achieved by testing specimens of commercial size for determining their cross-grain compression strength, and sometimes deformation, in either direct or indirect bearing conditions.

1.3These test methods do not address the development of design values, analytical models for specific applications, or performance requirements, or combinations thereof. These aspects are expected to be covered by the product standards that reference these test methods.

1.4These test methods are not intended to replace the related provisions of Specifications D7672 or D5055, which provide specific test guidance to be used when evaluating rim board or pre-fabricated wood I-joist products, respectively.

1.5These test methods apply to situations where full support is provided for the product thickness. Situations with partial bearing for the product thickness are outside the scope of these test methods.

1.6The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

1.7This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.8This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
