1.1This standard specifies performance requirements and test methods for protective headgear worn by individuals who work on roadways, including personnel involved in:

1.1.1Public safety (that is, fire service, emergency medical services, law enforcement, fire police);

1.1.2Road and highway construction and maintenance;

1.1.3Towing and recovery;

1.1.4Departments of transportation; and

1.1.5Safety service patrol.

1.2This standard addresses performance in terms of impact protection, chin protection (if a chin bar is included), external projections, positional stability, retention system strength, horizontal field of view, and face/eye protection.

1.2.1The performance requirements are listed within each test procedure as acceptance criteria.

1.2.2To claim compliance with this specification, test items shall be tested as specified in Sections 9 – 16 and shall meet the acceptance criteria.

1.2.3Optional tests and performance requirements are included in Appendix X1 – Appendix X3 for end users who have additional hazards of concern.

1.3This standard specifies pre-conditioning procedures to address environmental conditions in which these helmets are worn.

1.4This specification may be used by suppliers, certification or verification bodies, testing laboratories, research and development organizations, and others assessing the performance of protective helmets for pedestrian roadway workers.
