1.1This test method describes the testing, analytical, and characterization methods for evaluating the long-term fretting corrosion performance of the bore and cone interface of the head and stem junction of modular hip implants subjected to cyclic loading in a corrosive environment (1-5).

1.2This test method does not provide for prediction of in vivo implant fretting corrosion performance but rather provides a set of test parameters for evaluating relative differences in performance between differing implant designs, constructs, or materials with performance defined in the context of the amount of fretting and fretting corrosion. The test attempts to produce clinically relevant damage due to fretting and corrosion, but this does not necessarily predict in vivo performance or outcomes (6).

1.3This test method is for comparative evaluation of final finished hip femoral heads and either final finished stems or coupon-type specimens (4, 5).

1.4The general concepts and methodologies described in this test method could be applied to the study of other modular interfaces in total joint prostheses (see Appendix X7 for more information).

1.5The values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard. The units given in parentheses are for information only.

1.6This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.7This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
