1.1This test method covers procedures for determining air performance characteristics of commercial and household upright, canister, stick, hand-held, utility, and combination-type vacuum cleaners having provisions for attaching a hose and incorporating a series universal motor. This test method can be applied to the carpet cleaning mode of operation.

1.2These tests and calculations include determination of suction, airflow, air power, maximum air power, and input power under standard operating conditions (see Note 1). The nozzle mounted on plenum testing is an ideal air performance measurement and is not intended to represent the actual air performance during carpet or floor cleaning.

Note 1:For more information on air performance characteristics, see Refs (1-6).2

1.3The foot-pound-inch system of units is used in this standard. The values in parentheses are given for information only.

1.4This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. A specific precautionary statement is given in Note 2.

1.5This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
