This Technical Specification is a platform independent (logical) information model (PIM) for an electronic prescription (e-prescription). It specifies the information structure of e-prescriptions in order to support the electronic transfer of prescriptions (ETP).This Technical Specification defines the PIMs for e-prescription and the associated dispense record and prescription request. This Technical Specification specifies the essential clinical data groups and elements to be captured in an e-prescription exchange and the constraints that should be applied. This document provides the requirements for prescriptions that are generated by registered medical practitioners and dispensed by pharmacists. The types of prescriptions may include, but are not limited to, the following:(a)Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)/Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS) prescriptions.(b)PBS/RPBS authority prescriptions.(c)Non-PBS prescriptions (private prescriptions).(d)Prescriptions under a co-payment arrangement. This Technical Specification is a key input into Parts 3, 4 and 5 in the ATS 4888 series, which describe how to implement the three logical models in these parts in HL7 Clinical Document Architecture, Release 2. NOTE: Appendix B explains the comparison between printed and electronic prescriptions.
