Defines requirements for mattress cores made of flexible, combustion modified polyurethane foam for use in hospital wards. Provides for two classes of general purpose mattress core; for bedsteads, cots and maternity cribs for children, for bedsteads and cots for adult patients. Not applicable to mattresses for special purposes or mattresses comprising more than one layer of foam. Does not include requirements for mattress covers.

This part of BS5223 specifies requirements for mattress cores made of flexible, combustion modified polyurethane foam for use in hospital wards. It provides for two classes of general purpose mattress core as follows:

  • Class 1. Mattress cores for bedsteads and cots for adult patients;

  • Class 2. Mattress cores for bedsteads, cots and maternity cribs for children.

This part of this standard does not apply to mattresses for special purposes or mattresses comprising more than one layer of foam.

This part of this standard does not include requirements for mattress covers.
