This Part of BS 5350 describes a procedure for determining the bond strength of a double lap joint by subjecting the test piece to a compressive force. The method is applicable to all types of adhesive. Although primarily intended for use under ambient conditions, the basic method is also applicable to testing under a wide range of temperatures and other environmental conditions. The method requires rigid adherends produced to specified dimensional tolerances.

This test is intended for ranking and quality control of adhesives and not for obtaining data for design purposes.

NOTE The test may still be useful for research or control purposes even if the strength of the bond exceeds the strength of the adherend.
