This Part of BS 5655 specifies requirements for the design, construction and installation of hand-powered service lifts and platform hoists which are designed for a maximum rated load of 250 kg. Such lifts are not suitable for carrying passengers.

This standard also specifies the minimum safety provisions relating to the operation and maintenance of these lifts and hoists.

This standard is applicable to lifts and hoists which are loaded either at floor level or above floor level and that are suspended by either steel-wire ropes or chains.

This standard does not apply to builders’ hoists or similar apparatus.
