Defines the basic Beta format video cassette system and the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the related equipment necessary to provide for the interchangeability of recorded cassettes. The requirements given relate to both the 525 line -60 field and 625 line -50 field systems.

This standard applies to magnetic video recording using 12.65 mm (0.5 in) tape cassettes on two-head helical-scan video cassette recorders and defines the basic beta-format video cassette systems.
