Explains methods for determining presence of cracks and other defects in engineering ceramics by dye penetration tests. The results are reported as visual observations of dye penetration. Two tests are described. The fuchsine dye test for white or pale coloured ceramic products, and the fluorescent dye test for those products where the purple fuchsine has insufficient visual contrast with the ceramic.
