Preface This is the third edition of CSA C22.2 No. 89, Swimming-pool luminaires, submersible luminaires, and accessories, part of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. It supersedes the previous editions published in 1976 and 1968. This Standard also replaces the following Technical Information Letter (TIL), for products covered in this Standard: CSA TIL No. B-44, Permanently Connected, Cord-Connected and Direct Plug-In Lighting Systems Incorporating Nicheless Luminaire Assemblies that Employ Extra-Low Voltage Incandescent Lamps for Use in Pools. For general information on the Standards of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II, see the Preface of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0, General requirements — Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to submersible lighting systems and associated components for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I that are: a) permanently connected to branch circuit; or b) portable type, cord-connected or direct plug-in type. 1.2 This Standard covers submersible lighting systems for connection to a supply circuit of not more than 150 V, intended for swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, fountains, decorative pools, waterfalls, and similar submersible applications. 1.3 This Standard applies to the following associated components: a) isolating-type power supply; b) double insulated power supply; c) one or more luminaire assemblies of the incandescent, fluorescent, CFL, HID, or any LED technologytype; d) flexible cable and associated connectors intended for use in the secondary circuit; e) junction and deck boxes for swimming pool luminaires; f) junction boxes for submersible lighting systems; and g) forming shells for use with wet-niche luminaires. 1.4 This Standard does not apply to luminaires or junction boxes covered by other CSA standards such as: a) Low voltage landscape luminaires covered by CSA C22.2 No. 250.7. b) In ground recessed luminaires covered by CSA C22.2 No. 250.0. c) Junction or outlet boxes covered by CSA C22.2 No. 18.1 and CSA C22.2 No. 18.2. 1.5 In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application. 1.6 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. 1.7 In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.
