Essa ha lo scopo di definire le caratteristiche elettriche e meccaniche delle apparecchiature che permettono l'intercambiabilità delle registrazioni. Le prescrizioni date si riferiscono a sistemi a 525 linee - 60 trame e/o 625 linee - 50 trame.
