Scopo della norma è quello è definire alcune proprietà e quantità fondamentali della caratterizzazione dei terremoti come base per le severità cui potrebbero essere sottoposti i prodotti durante l'immagazzinaggio e l'uso. Si devono applicare le severità indicate nella pubblicazione IEC 721-1 (CEI 75-1).
