La Norma riguarda le dimensioni fisiche e la specifica dell'interfaccia dei dispositivi laser singoli a cavità verticale emittenti da una superficie (VCSEL) nelle applicazioni di telecomunicazioni e trasmissione dati ottiche. L'obiettivo della Norma è di specificare in modo adeguato le prescrizioni fisiche dei dispositivi VCSEL, in modo da abilitare l'intercambialità meccanica dei dispositivi laser o di trasmettitori conformi con questa norma con le prescrizioni sia dei cablaggi a circuito stampato sia di qualsiasi montaggio a pannello.
