La Norma copre la specifica prestazionale per un dispositivo laser di tipo multimodo trasversale, con superficie a cavità verticale e con emissione a 850 nm, usato con fibre ottiche per telecomunicazioni e per applicazioni di trasmissione dati ottiche. Essa contiene una definizione di prescrizioni prestazionali di prodotto insieme con una serie di prove e misure nonchè con le condizioni di prova, di severità e di criteri di superamento delle prove stesse, il tutto finalizzato ad una verifica 'una tantum' del dispositivo laser dal punto di vista prestazionale.
