Establishes guidelines for collecting, handling, and transporting arterial blood specimens aimed at reducing collection hazards and ensuring the integrity of the arterial specimen. Contains step-by-step procedures for doing a single puncture at the radial artery, femoral artery, brachial artery, and scalp arteries, as well as for repeated sampling from indwelling cannulae and catheters. Covers arterial sampling sites, potential hazards, vascular status and Allen test, umbilical artery catheter sampling from newborns, and proper handling and transportation of the arterial specimen. Contains a pictorial glossary of arterial blood collection devices, a description of cannulation, and an illustration showing the location of the brachial artery.
