Preface This is the first edition of CSA C880, Energy performance of stationary electric signs. The requirements of this Standard are in addition to those specified in CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 207. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of BC Hydro, the Canadian Electricity Association, Efficiency Nova Scotia, Hydro-Québec, Manitoba Hydro, Natural Resources Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Ontario Power Authority, and Saskpower. CSA Group is indebted to the California Energy Commission (CEC) for the use of the 2013 Building energy efficiency standards for residential and nonresidential buildings, Title 24, Part 6 and associated Administrative regulations in Part 1, in the development of this Standard. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies requirements and test procedures to determine the performance of stationary electric signs that are hard wired. Note: Background information on the scope and objective of this Standard is provided in Annex B. 1.2 This Standard applies to stationary electric signs for indoor or outdoor use, in nonhazardous locations, intended for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, on branch circuits of not more than 347 V between conductors and involving lamp voltages of not more than 7500 V. 1.3 This Standard includes requirements for a) internally illuminated signs (cabinet); b) unfiltered light emitting diodes (LEDs); c) unfiltered cold cathode/neon tubing; d) externally illuminated signs; e) awnings; and f) electronic sign displays with a viewable screen size equal to or more than 75 cm (30 in) diagonal. 1.4 This Standard does not include requirements for a) portable indoor and outdoor signs; b) unfiltered incandescent lamps used in signs of a historic nature or marquee type or that are not part of an electronic message center (EMC). This exception applies only to portions of a sign that are unfiltered incandescent lamps; Notes: 1) Only the portions of a hybrid sign consisting of unfiltered incandescent lamps are excluded from the sign lighting energy requirements. 2) See definition of \"unfiltered sign\" in Clause 3. c) exit signs; d) traffic signs; e) outline lighting; and f) electronic sign displays with a viewable screen size less than 75 cm (30 in) diagonal. Note: Electronic sign displays with a viewable screen size less than 75 cm (30 in) diagonal are covered under CSA C383. 1.5 In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.6 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
