Preface This is the fourth edition of CSA G12, Zinc-coated steel wire strand. It combines and supersedes the requirements of the previous editions of CSA G12, published in 1970 and 1978 (metric) and 1992, as well as those published in 1924, 1939, and 1950 as CSA B12, Galvanized steel wire strand. When the metric version of CSA CAN3-G12 was published in 1978, the expectation was that the imperial Standard, published in 1970, would be withdrawn in due course. The changeover to SI units in the industry has taken place only in part, so the need for the imperial Standard continues. This edition differs from the previous edition in the following ways: a) Tables 1 and 1a were combined into Table 1. b) The maximum tensile strength requirement (SI units) has been revised (see Table 2a). c) Tables 3 and 3a were combined into Table 3. d) Table 4a was revised to include the imperial equivalents for reference. e) Table 4b was revised to include the SI equivalents for reference. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard describes zinc-coated steel wire strand suitable for use as guys, suspension strand, span wires, and overhead ground wire strand. Overhead ground wire strand for electric power transmission is produced free of wire joints. Included are requirements for Grades 800, 1100, 1300, and 1500 (110, 160, 180, and 220). Zinc coatings for all grades include hot-dip Class A and electro-galvanized Class A, B, or C. Construction features include strands containing 7, 19, or more than 19 wires. 1.2 This Standard is not intended for use in the manufacture and purchase of galvanized bridge or ACSR strands, smooth coil track strand, or galvanized sash cord. 1.3 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents. Each system is to be used independently of the other. 1.4 In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application.
