CSA Preface This is the second edition of CSA ISO 18134-1, Solid biofuels — Determination of moisture content — Part 1: Reference method, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 18134-1 (second edition, 2022-08). It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2015 as CSA ISO 18134-1 (adopted ISO 18134-1:2015), Solid biofuels — Determination of moisture content — Oven dry method — Part 1: Total moisture — Reference method. For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as \"CSA ISO 18134-1\" throughout. The main changes since the previous edition are as follows: • the title has been revised; • a warning notice to avoid gain or loss of moisture during sample preparation has been added in Clause 6.1; • references have been updated; • minor editorial corrections have been made; and • more specific sample preparation information has been provided. This Standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Technical Committee on Solid Biofuels, under the jurisdiction of the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Fuel Burning Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope This document describes the method of determining the moisture content of a test sample of solid biofuels by drying in an oven and can be used when high precision of the determination of moisture content is necessary. The method described in this document is applicable to all solid biofuels. The moisture content of solid biofuels (as received) is always reported based on the total mass of the test sample (wet basis). NOTE Biomass materials can contain small amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC) which can evaporate when determining moisture content by oven drying (see References [1] and [2]). The release of such compounds is quite small relative to the overall moisture content as determined by this method and is disregarded in this document.
