The purpose of this standard is to facilitate the interchange of documents, and defines the following: a document architecture for the representation of documents; a document processing model; the document structures, the basic constituents of the architecture and a descriptive representation of these in terms of attributes; an interface which permits the use of different content architectures with the document architecture; the reference model of the document layout process; the reference model of the document imaging process; three document architecture classes; and defines a notation used for illustrating and describing document structure; and the standard gives examples of document architecture levels, document structures and gives examples of particular document attributes.
