The main use of the XID frame is for the exchange of data link information between two or more HDLC stations. The data link information includes any and all essential operational characteristics such as identification authentication and/or selection of optional functions and facilities concerning each station, for the purpose of this standard. A single-exchange negotiation procedure to establish operational characteristics when one or more stations are able to provide multiple selections, is also defined.
