The following, among others, are the characteristics of members of the genus Pseudomonas and thus of the species Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Gram negative, non-spore-forming, straight, rod-shaped bacteria, motile by means of polar whipping movements or - in infrequency cases - immotile; aerobic metabolism (in some cases facultative nitrate respiration), positive cytochromoxidase reaction.
