The water content and the dry residue are important parameters for the treatment or disposal of sludges and sediments. They are also used as reference quantities whenever analytically determined constituents are to be stated relative to the dry residue. The solids content of activated sludges is an important parameter for the design and operation of sludge activation plants. It is used, inter alia, for calculating the sludge volume index (as specified in DIN 38414 Part 10).
