    Diese Norm gilt für rechteckige Steckverbinder, die speziell in Anlagen für die Nachrichtentechnik, elektronische Datenverarbeitung und für elektronische Einrichtungen mit ähnlichen Techniken konzipiert sind. Dies ist eine Rahmennorm, sie soll in Verbindung mit den Fachgrundnormen der Reihe DIN 41 640 und den entsprechenden Bauartnormen angewendet werden. Nicht eingeschlossen sind Steckverbinder, die hauptsächlich über 3 MHz konzipiert sind. Zweck dieser Rahmennorm ist es, einheitliche Festlegungen zu treffen und Anforderungen für die Typprüfung festzulegen. Die Festlegungen für das Erstellen von entsprechenden Bauartnormen sind ergänzend in DIN 41 650 Teil 12 angegeben. Im Falle von Widersprüchen zwischen dieser Rahmennorm und der Bauartnorm gelten die Festlegungen der Bauartnorm.
