Diese Norm gilt vorzugsweise für die Anordnung von Geräten bzw. Bauteilen in elektrischen Schaltanlagen in offener und geschlossener Bauweise (Gestell/Gerüst, Schrank, Gehäuse/Kasten, Pult einschliesslich Einsatz/Einschub und Baugruppe). Siehe auch Erläuterungen. Darüber hinaus gilt für die Teilungsmasse von Schränken, DIN 41488 Teil 1 bis Teil 3. Die in dieser Norm festgelegte Modulordnung ist eine einheitliche Grundlage für die Planung, Konstruktion und Fabrikation von elektrischen Schaltanlagen, die den Einsatz rationeller Arbeitsweisen und Herstellverfahren ermöglicht.
