Using the 'universal' hardness test, hardness values are measured while the test force is still being applied (in contrast to the Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell tests). The indentation depth is measured automatically, not visually, eliminating subjectivity. The obtained values of test force and indentation depth can be used to provide information about other mechanical properties (e.g. elastic and plastic deformations).
