The thermal expansion of solids is determined with the aid of a dilatometer. The linear deformation can be established either mechanically, with the change being detected by probes and recorded by a mechanical or electrical displacement transducer (pickup), or optically, with the sighting device of a cathetometer, comparator, or interferometer being aligned with the end faces of a test piece.
