Diese Norm gilt für Schmierfette, deren Walkpenetration bei Bestimmung nach DIN ISO 2137 in den Grenzen von 85 bis 475 Einheiten liegt. Für Erzeugnisse wie Paraffin, Vaselin, Bitumen, Wachse und ähnliches, ist diese Norm nicht anzuwenden. Die Einteilung der Schmierfette nach der Walkpenetration in NLGI-Klassen dient der einfachen Kennzeichnung der Schmierfette nach ihrer Konsistenz.
