The method specified serves to determine the needle penetration of bitumen. It may also be used for testing bituminous products and special coal tar pitch products. The method can be used for determining needle penetrations up to 350 tenths of a millimetre. However, the method is only conditionally applicable to bituminous binders containing filling material. Here, too precision level differing from those specified in clause 9 are to be expected; the greater the particle size and the larger the proportion of filling material, the less accurate are the results likely to be.
